The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission is scheduled to host a public hearing on May 4 to consider a conditional use permit application from PCH WI Holdings LLC. The company proposes to construct a data center on a 208.95-acre site at 950 Fourth Ave. N. in Wisconsin Rapids, located on the former paper mill property. This hearing follows community events organized by local groups aiming to inform the public about the proposed development. South Wood County Neighbors for Responsible Development, along with Great Lakes Neighbors United, hosted an informational event on April 29. Speakers included comedian Charlie Berens, retired technology executive Prescott Balch, Dr. Brittany Keyes from Healthy Climate Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Farmers Union, and retired engineer Amanda Mueller. The group formed out of concerns regarding the potential long-term impacts of the data center on the Wisconsin River, natural resources, air quality, noise levels, and wildlife. Spokesperson Kaitlyn Federwitz emphasized the need for transparency and public accountability, stating that decisions of this scale should not happen "behind closed doors." Separately, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association hosted an educational presentation on April 30, focusing on the electric grid and its impact on residents, and providing resources for informed decisions about local energy. Executive Director Nick Hylla noted the importance of understanding energy details. Both events were organized to facilitate dialogue and provide information to residents ahead of the Planning Commission's decision.
