The Clark County Commission is actively working to establish new guidelines for data center development in Clark County, Nevada, following significant public pushback. During a recent meeting in Las Vegas, commissioners engaged in a heated public comment session where residents expressed concerns about the impact of data centers on utilities, the environment, and local quality of life. Katrin Ivanoff urged a moratorium on new projects until more information could be gathered about their effects.

Commissioner Tick Segerblom emphasized the need to protect residents from increased electricity and water rates, noise, and pollution, suggesting that companies building data centers should provide additional public benefits related to infrastructure. Both Segerblom and Commissioner April Becker indicated openness to exploring a moratorium to better understand the issues before implementing new ordinances. Jeffrey Brew, involved in the data center business, also supported a temporary pause to allow the county to study approaches taken by other regions like Data Center Alley in Virginia or Texas.

Commissioners acknowledged that setting comprehensive guidelines would be a lengthy process, involving legal considerations, public hearings, and legislative actions, potentially extending into the next legislative session. This initiative reflects a growing trend of local governments grappling with the rapid expansion of the data center industry and its demands on local resources and infrastructure.
