Clayton County Supervisors hold information session on Bitcoin data center
The Clayton County Board of Supervisors held an informational meeting in Elkader, Iowa, regarding a proposed cryptocurrency data center by Wilson Mining. The company currently cannot build due to an existing county ordinance, specifically concerning sound levels. The meeting aimed to clarify the developer's intentions and address community questions, including concerns about local impact versus potential benefits like stabilizing power rates.
On Tuesday, the Clayton County Board of Supervisors held a crowded informational meeting in Elkader, Iowa, concerning a proposed cryptocurrency data center. The meeting was called because an existing county ordinance currently prevents Wilson Mining, a local Bitcoin mining company, from building its new data center.
Eric Wilson, who started Wilson Mining with his brother several years ago, explained that the current ordinance requires data centers to be below 50 decibels at night. Wilson stated that even a substation itself exceeds this limit, posing a significant challenge for their proposed facility. The meeting served as a platform for Wilson to present his intentions and field questions from the community.
Community members, like Randall Laughhead from Strawberry Point, expressed concerns about the benefits a data center would bring to the county. However, Hollee McCormick with the Allamakee Clayton County Energy Cooperative suggested that a large customer like Wilson Mining could help stabilize power rates for local residents by putting "downward pressure" on them. The proposed facility is significantly smaller than other data centers being built in Linn County, maxing out at 2,000 square feet.
