Residents, including Briana Bartlett, expressed significant worries about the environmental toll, including the depletion of the local aquifer, increased noise pollution, and the broader impact on community resources. Bartlett articulated the sentiment, stating, "We're being asked to sacrifice the lifeblood of our local community so that a trillion dollar company can save a fraction of a cent on its margins." Other concerns included the possibility of families relocating due to facility disruptions.
The proposed moratorium was driven by the ongoing consideration of a Google data center, which first requires the passage of a state legislative bill to allow privately owned power generation facilities before moving to county-level hurdles. The commission's decision will now be forwarded to the Gage County Board of Supervisors for their final approval.
