Two more cities pass moratoriums on new data centers
Thornton and Commerce City, Colorado, have passed moratoriums on new data center development, citing concerns over energy and water usage. Commerce City enacted a six-month pause, while Thornton implemented a one-year moratorium on facilities larger than 50,000 square feet. These actions follow similar moratoriums previously passed in Denver, Jefferson County, and Larimer County.
Thornton and Commerce City, Colorado, recently enacted moratoriums on new data center development due to growing concerns about energy and water consumption. Commerce City's City Council approved a six-month ban on new applications for data centers with a 7-1 vote, intending to establish comprehensive rules and regulations for such facilities during this period.
Following suit, Thornton's City Council passed a one-year moratorium on Tuesday night by a 5-3 vote. This pause specifically applies to data centers larger than 50,000 square feet. These decisions mark a trend in Colorado, as Denver, Jefferson County, and Larimer County have previously implemented similar halts on data center construction.
