Clean Wisconsin warns Marshfield officials of potential impacts from AI data centers

Marshfield Common Council members received an early look at potential environmental and infrastructure challenges associated with large artificial intelligence (AI) data centers during a recent presentation by Clean Wisconsin.
Amy Barrilleaux of Clean Wisconsin delivered an informational presentation detailing concerns regarding the electricity demand, water usage, farmland conversion, and air pollution that could arise if such facilities were to locate in central Wisconsin. She highlighted that the newest generation of AI data centers operates on a substantially larger scale than traditional centers and urged local governments to thoroughly evaluate impacts beyond the immediate development boundaries, particularly concerning increased electricity demand that could necessitate new fossil fuel generation.
The presentation, requested by council member Brian Giles, was for informational purposes only, and the council did not take any action. Council members asked limited questions following the briefing.
City officials concluded that the information shared would be valuable in preparing Marshfield with the right questions to ask, should a data center proposal ever be brought before them.
