Simultaneously, Elon Musk's xAI data center, operating its "Colossus" supercomputer campus, continues to hum with full power, a stark contrast that has ignited public anger and revealed deep-seated infrastructure inequities.
The data center's uninterrupted operation is attributed to its advanced private microgrid system, which bypasses Memphis's aging public utility grid. Unlike the residential network of vulnerable overhead wires, the xAI facility utilizes a multi-layered system including direct high-voltage lines, an on-site substation, and mobile gas turbines and Tesla Megapacks for independent power generation. This "behind-the-meter" solution allowed the facility to rapidly scale its massive energy capacity, insulating it from the local grid failures that impact the public.

The xAI data center's high-emission gas turbines are located near historically marginalized communities, forcing residents to contend with air pollution even as they endure prolonged power outages.
