Hundreds of Nashvillians and leaders from the Nashville Zoo are actively opposing a proposed data center development near the zoo. Zoo director Rick Schwartz expressed significant concerns about the potential negative impacts on animals, particularly endangered species like clouded leopards, due to mechanical noises and environmental disruptions.

During a recent planning commission meeting, numerous residents voiced their worries regarding increased carbon emissions, noise, light pollution, electronic waste, and other detrimental health and environmental effects. Doug Sloan, representing DC BLOX, the company behind the proposed data center, addressed some of these fears, emphasizing the varying operational characteristics of different data centers and advocating for regulations based on actual impacts rather than assumptions.

In response to the widespread community outcry, the Mayor of Nashville issued an executive order supporting a temporary moratorium on new large-scale data centers. The planning commission, after hearing nearly four hours of testimony, voted to defer the data center item to a subsequent meeting, where public input will inform draft recommendations. The Nashville Zoo is also encouraging community members to sign a petition against the project.
