A new $100 billion AI data center campus is slated for the Department of Energy (DOE) Paducah Site in western Kentucky, generating discussions among residents about its potential impact on electricity bills. Project leaders and local officials have moved to address these concerns by clarifying the energy strategy for the massive development.

John W. Ketchum, CEO of NextEra Energy, confirmed that the data center will rely on new energy infrastructure built specifically for the project, rather than drawing from existing regional resources. "We're building energy infrastructure specifically designed for this data center campus," Ketchum stated, emphasizing that the costs will be borne by the project itself, not by local residents. This model aims to support economic development while protecting existing utility customers.

U.S. Rep. Andy Barr further elaborated on the project's energy independence, noting that the campus is expected to generate more electricity than it consumes. He explained that the excess power would flow back into the regional grid, enhancing reliability and potentially reducing costs for Kentucky homes and businesses. Mark Lindsey, Vice President of Member Services and Communication for Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative, corroborated that some of the surplus energy supplied by NextEra to Brookfield would help stabilize rates.

According to a DOE release, the AI data center campus will require 1.8 gigawatts of energy. To meet this demand, NextEra Energy plans to develop 2 GW of new grid-connected natural gas-fired generation and deploy up to 2.6 GW of battery energy storage. The data center and battery storage facilities are projected to commence operations as early as 2028, with the natural gas generation component anticipated to come online by 2032.
