North Tonawanda seeks to extend data center moratorium
North Tonawanda is seeking to extend its moratorium on cryptocurrency mining and data processing center development for another year. The initial moratorium was established to protect residents and allow time to update zoning codes, following complaints about noise and pollution from the Digi Power X crypto plant. The proposed extension aims to provide the city with more oversight on the plant's operations and any potential expansions.
The city of North Tonawanda is actively pursuing an extension of its moratorium on cryptocurrency mining and data processing center development for an additional year. Mayor Austin Tilik is spearheading this effort, building on the initial moratorium established last year.
The original stoppage was put in place to safeguard the residents of North Tonawanda and provide the city with sufficient time to revise its zoning codes. This action was prompted by considerable frustration among residents concerning the Digi Power X crypto plant located on Erie Avenue, with numerous complaints citing pollution and disruptive noise.
Mayor Tilik stated that the moratorium grants the city enhanced oversight regarding the crypto plant's operations and any future expansion plans. He emphasized the goal to ensure that the project or site does not worsen, particularly concerning noise levels.
The plant is reportedly proposing changes to its footprint, including the installation of a water-cooled closed system to replace the current setup involving thousands of fans, which is expected to reduce noise. However, the city is not solely relying on these assurances. The proposed moratorium extension is currently under review by the Niagara County Planning Commission before it can be officially passed, with the existing moratorium slated to expire on July 16th.
