Data Center Allies Form a Coalition to Discuss Economic Benefits Amid Opposition
Tech and energy companies have formed the Lone Star Infrastructure Coalition to promote the economic benefits of data centers and address concerns about power, noise and water use. The coalition comes as opposition to data center construction grows among Texans and state lawmakers reconsider the pace of industry expansion.
Lancium, Oncor, Siemens Energy and other technology and energy companies have formed the Lone Star Infrastructure Coalition, led by former energy executive and Public Utility Commissioner Jimmy Glofelty. The group aims to explain the economic benefits of data centers and encourage more dialogue with communities considering new facilities.
AI expert Matt Rosen said developers should provide their own power or help strengthen local electric infrastructure, address noise concerns and demonstrate community benefits. He cited polling by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin showing that 57% of surveyed Texans oppose data center construction in their communities, compared with 30% who support it, as state lawmakers slow the industry's expansion amid rising opposition.
