The WSPA 7News report detailed an update from North Mark Strategy on its $2.8 billion high-performance computing facility under construction in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Known initially as "Project Mach 1," the development is transforming the former Kohler plant on South Pine Street.
The project has faced significant community pushback, with residents like Emory voicing environmental concerns regarding air, water, electricity consumption, noise, and light pollution. In response, North Mark Strategy released a community message to clarify details and address these issues. The company stated it plans to generate its own power using natural gas to limit the impact on local electricity bills and committed to voluntarily installing emission reduction equipment with continuous real-time tracking.
Regarding water, the company affirmed it would use the existing water permit, rely solely on municipal water, and conduct all wastewater treatment on-site without requesting additional capacity. Despite these assurances and ongoing efforts to address concerns like traffic, noise, and lighting, some residents remain unconvinced, stating they lack confidence until all their questions are thoroughly answered. Construction is slated to continue through 2028, with North Mark Strategy projecting an increase in annual tax revenue for Spartanburg County from approximately $500,000 to $15 million.
