Kentucky state Rep. J.T. Payne and challenger Janelle Rowena Glass outlined their positions on data centers during a campaign discussion in Henderson. Payne said local governments and residents should decide whether a facility is appropriate, while state lawmakers should establish protections for utilities, the environment and nearby neighborhoods.

Payne suggested requirements such as closed-loop water systems, increased separation from homes and schools, and safeguards to prevent residents’ utility costs from rising. Glass expressed concern that data centers could receive priority access to electricity during severe weather while residents face reduced service, and said communities should evaluate their economic return and job creation before approving them.
