Kokomo council considers data center zoning and 2027 budget in the coming days

The Kokomo Common Council is set to conduct a second reading on a zoning ordinance that would designate data centers as a permitted use on all industrial sites. The proposed amendment includes new regulations for data centers, such as a 200-foot setback from residential properties and a 300-foot separation from existing residences. However, it does not introduce new restrictions on noise or utility usage.
During a prior council meeting, approximately a dozen residents voiced their opposition, citing concerns over potential noise, increased utility demands, and a decline in quality of life. When asked about a potential moratorium on data center developments, Republican Council President Greg Davis stated that such a measure had been discussed but failed to garner sufficient support from the council. Mayor Tyler Moore, a Republican, indicated that data center developers have expressed interest in Howard County, though no specific projects are currently active in Kokomo.
These discussions are taking place ahead of a public hearing on the city's proposed $128 million budget for the coming year, with a final vote on the budget scheduled for September 28.
