Missoula County commissioners are considering a temporary pause on new and expanding data centers through interim zoning. This measure is intended to allow the county to develop updated zoning rules that address potential adverse impacts. Concerns include substantial energy and water consumption, as well as heat, noise, and vibration.

Missoula County commissioners are scheduled to hold a public hearing on Thursday, July 9, at 2 p.m. to consider enacting interim zoning regulations for data centers. This temporary measure would place a halt on new data center development or expansion while the county develops updated, permanent zoning rules.

The proposed interim zoning is a response to concerns about the potential adverse impacts of data centers, including significant energy and water consumption, as well as heat, noise, and vibration affecting surrounding areas. Missoula County officials highlighted that data centers represent a "significant new use" requiring careful consideration.

The public meeting will take place at the Sophie Moiese Room of the Missoula County Courthouse, with virtual participation options also available. If adopted, the interim zoning could be in effect for up to one year, with a possible one-year extension, and requires the county to initiate a study within 30 working days to verify the emergency and determine further action.
