Oakland councilmember and developer say proposed AI campus would be distinct from data center
An Oakland developer and City Councilmember are working to dispel rumors that a proposed AI campus is a large-scale data center, emphasizing its smaller footprint and different resource needs. Community members and advocates remain concerned about environmental impact and public costs. The councilmember is drafting local laws to regulate AI development.
Oakland City Councilmember Carroll Fife and developer Colin Behring addressed local media to clarify the nature of a proposed "AI campus" in downtown Oakland, aiming to distinguish it from a traditional large-scale data center. The project, slated for a former supercomputer facility, has not yet been presented to the city council, but Behring emphasized its smaller physical footprint and assured that power and water supply would not be issues. Fife acknowledged the public's legitimate concerns regarding data centers' heavy environmental impact and high consumption of electricity and water, stressing that this specific proposal would not be a "mega facility".
Despite these assurances, community members and labor advocates, including Stasia Hansen, policy director at the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, expressed caution. Concerns were raised about potential public costs related to energy and cooling needs impacting taxpayers. Separately, the California Public Utilities Commission postponed a discussion regarding a proposed 250-megawatt data center involving Google and PG&E in the South Bay, highlighting broader regional energy concerns.
Fife indicated the Oakland AI facility might proceed under existing zoning without city council approval, but underscored the necessity for strict oversight and responsible AI development. She is currently drafting local legislation to regulate future AI projects. The project remains in preliminary stages as discussions continue regarding its economic benefits versus its potential community and environmental impacts.
