Industry experts discuss data center trends

Data centers are rapidly expanding across the country, including in the Michiana region, offering promises of economic growth and a foothold in the AI future. However, industry experts are urging communities to critically evaluate the long-term impacts beyond the initial construction and investment. Dr. Lauren Keeler, from Arizona State University's School for the Future of Innovation and Society, emphasized that data centers are significant consumers of energy and water resources. She noted that while construction creates a temporary burst of jobs, the operational phase provides minimal long-term employment opportunities, challenging the narrative of substantial job creation. Another major concern highlighted by the experts from a Sciline Data Center Panel is the strain on infrastructure, particularly the massive power demands these facilities place on the electrical grid. Dr. Kate Stoll, Project Director for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, warned against inadequate planning, explaining that overbuilding capacity could unfairly burden ratepayers with costs, while underbuilding could lead to grid instability, brownouts, and issues with water infrastructure systems.
