A nationwide wave of protests against data center development occurred across dozens of communities, with Texas hosting the most demonstrations, including one in Abilene. The rally in Abilene, organized by Save Abilene at Cal Young Park as part of a national effort by Humans First, featured speakers who highlighted the local impacts of rapid data center growth.
Protest speaker Diana Luna noted that Abilene, being an early site for the data center boom in Texas, is already experiencing "residual effects" that other communities might face later. Rich Lyles emphasized the importance for small cities to thoroughly evaluate the true costs and requirements of data center projects before proceeding.
Attendee Ai Parvin expressed a sense of "betrayal of trust," arguing that Abilene residents suffer for corporate profit. Parvin voiced concerns that the continued growth could damage the "heart and soul of Abilene," extending beyond issues like roads and water usage to the city's fundamental identity and spirit.
