Orange County could temporarily pause AI data centers

Orange County commissioners are scheduled to discuss a possible moratorium on AI data center development during a board meeting. Commissioner Kelly Martinez Semrad previously sent a memo advocating for at least a one-year pause, citing the need for Orange County to update its policies regarding data center approvals and to conduct environmental impact studies.

Semrad highlighted that Orange County is in a "regulatory gray area" concerning its capacity to manage and regulate data center uses, as demand for this infrastructure grows across Florida and the nation. Data centers, which house computer servers and hardware for AI and cloud computing, are known to place significant strain on power grids.

Several other Florida counties, including Pasco and Hernando, have already implemented temporary pauses on data center development. Just last week, the Lake County Commission approved a 90-day pause on accepting applications for large-scale data centers. This local action comes amidst a new state law, SB 484, which aims to provide local governments with the authority to reject data center development and prevent related costs from being passed onto consumers.
