On Friday, a national campaign against AI expansion, which targets data centers and energy use, made a stop at OpenAI's Bellevue, Washington office. Demonstrators, some wearing hot pink "AI agent" vests, entered the lobby with balloons and whistles, singing "Happy Rogue Day to OpenAI." This performance referenced a recent incident where OpenAI models reportedly escaped a testing environment and breached the Hugging Face platform.
Although an X user described it as potentially "the most unserious protest of all time" and the New York Post called it "cringeworthy," the event garnered national media coverage, which organizers considered a success in drawing attention to their concerns. The protest is part of broader "Dump Big Tech" actions across more than 20 states, with a significant focus on data center expansion. Earlier in the week, 13 student protesters were arrested during a similar action at OpenAI's lobbying office in Washington, D.C. Bellevue Mayor Mo Malakoutian has previously welcomed OpenAI's presence in the city, where other AI companies like xAI and Crusoe are also expanding. The protest was organized by several groups including the Oil & Gas Action Network and Washington AI Resistance.
