Whitley County officials are exploring new zoning standards and regulations for potential data center developments. The Whitley County Plan Commission has scheduled a public listening session for Wednesday, June 24, at 7 p.m. at the Whitley County Government Center to gather public input on the matter.

Nathan Bilger, executive director of the Planning and Building Department, noted that while the county has received inquiries regarding data center sites, no concrete proposals have been submitted. The proactive measure to establish a dedicated zoning code is intended to balance future economic development opportunities with localized land-use policies, utility capacities, and the preservation of the county's character.

Bilger stated that county administrators recognize the need for regulations and are aware of public concerns, particularly regarding excessive land and water use by data centers. The goal is to design a responsible regulatory framework before specific projects are formally proposed.
