O'Leary Digital Utah refiled a water-rights application on Oct. 15 for its proposed Stratos data center project in Box Elder County, Utah. The application seeks 1,712 acre-feet of water annually and will be evaluated by the Utah Division of Water Rights and the Utah State Engineer under state law.
The project's previous water application drew hundreds of formal protests before it was withdrawn. Community and environmental groups are expected to protest again, citing concerns about the data center's environmental, energy and consumer impacts. The project has also become a political issue, with demonstrations and opposition campaigns targeting officials who supported its approval, including the Military Installation Development Authority and Box Elder County commissioners.
