ERCOT projects a significant surge in electricity demand in Texas by the 2030s, primarily driven by the increasing number of data centers. Peak demand could more than triple current levels, reaching 367,790 megawatts by 2032, according to a recent presentation by the grid operator.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) anticipates a sharp rise in electricity demand within its grid by the 2030s, with data centers identified as the primary driver of this projected growth. This information comes from a presentation given by the grid operator.
ERCOT's preliminary base forecast indicates that peak electricity demand is expected to climb from approximately 98,087 megawatts in 2026 to around 111,318 megawatts by 2032. However, when factoring in large and medium industrial loads reported by transmission companies, the peak demand could dramatically increase to 367,790 megawatts by 2032, surpassing current levels by more than three times.
Non-cryptocurrency data centers are projected to account for the largest portion of this increased demand, followed by cryptocurrency mining, general industrial customers, and oil and gas operations. ERCOT noted that these projections reflect "continued growth and interest in Texas and the ERCOT grid." The report was compiled by Pablo Sinha in Bengaluru and edited by Louise Heavens for Reuters.
