The Tennessee Valley Authority board has approved a new rate structure for data centers in its service region. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) board has approved a new rate structure for data centers operating within its service region, a move designed to address the booming growth of data centers across the mid-south. The newly approved policy will impose higher electricity rates on data centers and require new customers to make an upfront capacity commitment.
According to TVA CFO Tom Rice, the change shifts data centers from a manufacturing rate to a dedicated data center rate, resulting in an approximate 10% increase phased in over three years. New data center customers will also face a capacity commitment charge, payable over three to five years, which Rice stated is crucial for funding necessary additions to the power grid.
Rice emphasized that TVA will only build out capacity and transmission systems to meet existing demand, avoiding speculation on future needs. This rate change will apply to all data center customers across the entire TVA service area, aiming to protect residential customers from increased costs.
