Meta's Richland Parish Data Center Is Now a $50 Billion Project
Meta is significantly expanding its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, increasing the project's cost to $50 billion and its power demand to 5 gigawatts. This expansion necessitates a major power infrastructure buildout by Entergy and comes with substantial tax breaks and local infrastructure commitments. Consumer advocacy groups have voiced concerns about the potential impact on local power costs, prompting the state to draft new regulatory rules for future data center projects.
Meta announced a massive expansion of its Hyperion data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, boosting the project's total investment from $10 billion to $50 billion and making it one of the world's largest artificial intelligence facilities. Governor Jeff Landry praised the development, highlighting its potential to create 7,500 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent jobs by 2036.
The expanded facility will require 5 gigawatts of power, necessitating Entergy to construct ten new power plants, including seven natural gas facilities, solar farms, and battery storage. Meta has pledged to cover the construction costs for all new power plants and will fund 2.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy and associated transmission lines. The company also committed $1 billion to upgrade local infrastructure in Richland Parish, one of Louisiana's poorest areas, and is investing in workforce training programs.
Despite the economic benefits, consumer advocacy groups have raised concerns that the data center's immense electricity demand could increase power costs for Louisiana residents. In response, Governor Landry directed the state's economic development agency to draft new rules to mitigate this risk for future data center projects. Meta secured a comprehensive package of tax breaks, including exemptions from state and local sales taxes and a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement with Richland Parish that offers significant property tax reductions based on job creation metrics.
