South Kingstown Vice President Michael Marran has proposed an ordinance banning dedicated data centers throughout the town while allowing accessory server rooms that support schools, hospitals, offices or other businesses. Town Solicitor Amy Goins said developers would need to obtain a zoning amendment from the Town Council before submitting any development proposal.

The South Kingstown Planning Board has approved the proposal for consideration, and the Town Council is expected to hold a public hearing before voting. Marran cited the facilities' substantial electricity and water demands, while the article noted that several other Rhode Island communities have adopted bans or temporary restrictions. South Kingstown currently has no data centers subject to the proposed ordinance.
