Metro to vote on data center regulations
Metro Nashville is voting on several bills next week to regulate data centers, including a ban on large data centers in certain areas and a temporary moratorium on permits. There is also a proposal to buy land near the Nashville Zoo to prevent data center development, with significant public support already shown at previous meetings.
Metro Nashville Council is preparing for a crucial vote next week on multiple bills designed to regulate data centers. The previous council meeting experienced a five-hour public comment session, with hundreds of residents expressing strong support for these proposed measures.
The legislation under consideration includes a ban on large data centers in specific areas, such as those near schools, churches, and the Nashville Zoo. Another significant bill proposes a temporary moratorium on data center permits, intended to remain in effect until a comprehensive regulatory framework can be developed.
Furthermore, the council will vote on a resolution to acquire land next to the Nashville Zoo, a move supported by the mayor's office, to prevent a large data center from being built there. The mayor's office states this land is needed for local offices and other public spaces, as the airport's expansion necessitated the closure of older facilities. These bills and resolutions are scheduled for a second vote on Tuesday, with a third and final vote required for their official enactment.
