Will County Board Member Destinee Ortiz has introduced a resolution to initiate public hearings on a temporary data center moratorium in Will County, Illinois. Will County Board Member Destinee Ortiz, representing the Romeoville area, has submitted a resolution to the county board to begin a public hearing process on a temporary data center moratorium. The proposal is a direct response to concerns raised by residents during a town hall, who are worried about the potential effects of data centers on water and electricity supply, infrastructure, stormwater, noise, and neighboring properties.
Ortiz highlighted that the resolution would not immediately impose a moratorium but would instead kickstart the process by asking the Land Use Department and Zoning Administrator to prepare proposed zoning amendment language. Following this, the Planning and Zoning Commission would conduct public hearings, gather testimony, and provide recommendations to the County Board. The decision to adopt an eight-month moratorium would necessitate a separate vote by the County Board at a later date. Ortiz is currently awaiting the scheduling of the resolution for Executive Committee consideration, emulating a strategy previously employed by Lake County.
