Cedar Rapids confirms third data center planned for southwest side
Cedar Rapids has confirmed plans for a third data center, to be built on the southwest side by an entity called "CLOP". The 100,000 square foot facility complies with existing zoning, leading the city mayor to state there is no need for a moratorium, contrasting with a recently approved moratorium by Linn County Supervisors. The mayor emphasized Cedar Rapids' identity as an industrial community where such data centers align with the city's future.
A third data center has been confirmed for Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to be developed on the city's southwest side. Municipal permitting paperwork indicates the entity behind the approximately 100,000 square foot facility is named "CLOP," and it will be situated at 1515 33rd Avenue Southwest, near Highway 30.
Cedar Rapids' Mayor stated that because the project adheres to current zoning regulations, the city does not perceive a necessity for a moratorium on data center construction within its jurisdiction. This position differs from that of the Linn County Supervisors, who recently enacted a moratorium.
The Mayor further characterized Cedar Rapids as an "industrial community," asserting that existing data centers align with the city's character and future development goals. She noted the new data center's size as "half the size of a Marion and Hiawatha," suggesting it is a modest addition, and emphasized that similar facilities have long been an integral part of the region.
