Los Angeles-based firm breaks ground on $15B data center in Hudspeth County
Kaufman & Company and ServerDomes have broken ground on a planned $15 billion data center campus near Desert Haven in Hudspeth County. County officials expressed concern that they were not informed in advance and raised questions about the project’s potential effects on local water supplies and electricity demand.
Kaufman & Company and other project partners have begun construction on a planned data center campus spanning roughly 24,000 acres near the Desert Haven community in Hudspeth County. The development is expected to include dome-like structures, generate 350 megawatts of power and represent an investment of about $15 billion. ServerDomes is identified as one of the companies involved.
Hudspeth County Judge Joanna MacKenzie said local officials and residents received little information before the groundbreaking and expressed concern about potential impacts on power and water resources. Project representatives acknowledged that communication should have started earlier and said they would improve coordination. They told MacKenzie the facility would initially draw water from an onsite aquifer-connected well before using a closed-loop catchment system, while the campus is expected to generate its own power. A presentation to the Hudspeth County Commissioners Court was planned for Oct. 27.
