The Jefferson County Board in Wisconsin has unanimously passed an 18-month moratorium on data center development. This decision follows similar actions by over 500 other localities across the United States, including nearby municipalities like Madison, Cottage Grove, Stoughton, and Johnson Creek.
The moratorium, which halts the receipt and granting of all zoning-related permits for data centers, aims to provide the county with time to research the potential impacts of such developments. County officials intend to establish appropriate standards for data center regulation during this period.
Key concerns that led to the moratorium include health and safety issues such as freshwater depletion and pollution, the potential for overloading utility infrastructure, increased energy demand, fire hazards, and impacts on emergency response, property values, noise, and aesthetics. County Board First Vice Chair James Braughler, Chair Steve Nass, Administrator Michael Luckey, and Supervisors Matthew Tracy and Kirk Lund discussed the implications and specifics of the ordinance before its unanimous approval. The moratorium can be extended if necessary, or rescinded earlier if regulations are established sooner.
