Memphis City Council continues work on data center proposals after shortened meeting
The Memphis City Council is continuing discussions on proposed data center regulations and a possible pause on data center development after a prior meeting was cut short. The council is scheduled to vote on whether to pause development at its October 20 meeting, preceded by several public and committee meetings.
The Memphis City Council resumed discussions on data center development after a Tuesday meeting was shortened when a vote on pausing development for additional research was delayed. The delay prompted an uproar from community members, while council members continued work on proposed measures governing data center development in the city.
Council member Phillip Spinoza confirmed three upcoming meetings focused on environmental protections, public engagement, and community benefits and economic growth. Only one of those meetings is expected to occur before the council considers a proposed development pause at its October 20 meeting.
