OpenAI to lease massive new AI data centre in US, backed by Nvidia
OpenAI plans to lease a massive new AI data center in Ohio, backed by Nvidia and SoftBank, which could reach 8 gigawatts of capacity, making it the largest single AI facility. The project, located on a former uranium enrichment plant site, includes over US$4 billion in local energy infrastructure investment from SoftBank and SB Energy to build 10 GW of new energy generation. The development comes amidst growing public hostility towards data centers due to their high electricity and water consumption.
OpenAI is set to lease a colossal new artificial intelligence data center in Ohio, described as the largest single AI facility globally with a potential capacity of 8 gigawatts. This project is a collaborative effort involving Nvidia and SoftBank, with the latter's subsidiary, SB Energy, serving as the data center owner.
The facility will be built on the site of a former Cold War-era uranium enrichment plant and will exclusively utilize Nvidia chips. SoftBank, through SB Energy, and OpenAI are investing significantly in the project; SoftBank and SB Energy will commit over US$4 billion to local energy infrastructure, aiming to generate at least 10 GW of new energy for the site, while OpenAI will contribute US$40 million to support local initiatives. Nvidia is also investing US$1.5 billion into SB Energy, addressing concerns about circular financing within the AI sector.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated the site will provide immense computing power for millions using AI. The company anticipates creating 35,000 temporary construction jobs over six years and 2,500 long-term operating positions. These job and energy investment promises are a direct response to increasing public opposition to data centers, driven by their high electricity and water demands and concerns over rising utility bills. OpenAI and SB Energy have pledged to cover energy and infrastructure costs themselves, without burdening local residents.
