San Francisco lacks tracking and specific zoning for data centers

The AI capital of the world doesn’t know how many data centers it has because, well, the city’s Planning Department does not track them. But the issue goes beyond making the public aware of data center sites, of which there are six identified in San Francisco by Data Center Map. San Francisco’s zoning code also doesn’t have specific land use definitions for data centers nor special requirements based on their use of electricity and water. Experts say that cities without this land use definition are not positioned to regulate data centers or issue appropriate communications and benefits plans for communities impacted by their construction.
