The City of Cheyenne is holding an informational meeting on data center development, inviting residents to discuss concerns with local officials and utility representatives. This comes after the City Council rejected a proposed moratorium, though a petition for a new moratorium and regulatory study is ongoing amid public debate over water and electricity usage.

The City of Cheyenne has announced it will host a community informational meeting on data centers and local data center development. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cheyenne Civic Center, and will be free and open to the public.

Representatives from the City of Cheyenne, Cheyenne LEADS, Black Hills Energy, the Board of Public Utilities, and local data centers are expected to attend. They will be available to answer questions from residents regarding data center development, their integration with local planning efforts, and utility demands.

Data centers have become a significant point of contention in Cheyenne and Laramie County, with some estimates suggesting the area could host up to 70 such facilities if all proposed projects are built. The Cheyenne City Council recently voted down a proposed one-year moratorium on data center construction.

However, a petition drive is currently underway, advocating for a 12-18 month moratorium to allow for comprehensive studies on data center impacts and the potential development of new regulations. While supporters argue that concerns about water usage and electricity consumption are often misinformed, opponents maintain that legitimate questions remain unanswered and existing regulations are insufficient to manage the rapid growth of these facilities.
