Local opposition is intensifying against TeraWulf's proposed 300- to 400-megawatt AI data center project on the shores of Cayuga Lake in the Town of Lansing, New York. Two online petitions, one by the advocacy group No Data Center FLX and another on Change.org, have collectively gathered nearly 8,000 signatures, expressing significant concerns about the development.
Opponents argue the project poses severe environmental threats, including permanent alteration of wetlands, increased runoff into Cayuga Lake, and long-term consequences for the watershed. They contend the plan requires clearing over 40 acres of forested hillside and constructing new transmission infrastructure through sensitive wetland areas. Furthermore, concerns are raised regarding the project's substantial energy demand, potentially straining New York's electric grid, especially given warnings from the New York Independent System Operator. TeraWulf's proposal reportedly includes around-the-clock construction for up to six years, causing noise and disruption, and the potential installation of six diesel generators for backup power. The company also informed local officials, including the Lansing Planning Board, about plans to withdraw up to 700,000 gallons of lake water daily for cooling during peak conditions.
The petitions emphasize the importance of preserving Cayuga Lake's environmental and cultural significance for wildlife, recreation, and community well-being. Advocates are calling on the Lansing Planning Board, Lansing Town Board, and Tompkins County officials to reject the project or explore alternative solutions that would better protect the Cayuga Lake watershed. TeraWulf has not publicly addressed these concerns within the petitions.
