Box Elder County commissioners have approved plans for a massive data center project, potentially the world's largest, leading to lingering questions and concerns among local residents. The project, expected to cost over $1 billion, has generated uncertainty in the community regarding its future impact. Resident Heather Tolman expressed the sentiment, stating, "I don't know that any of us really truly know what's going on."
Residents' primary concerns include the project's significant water usage and when construction might begin. KUTV 2 News correspondent Lesley Duarte attempted to interview county commissioners, but they were unavailable. In a press conference, commissioners indicated a capital raising effort would take place over the next 60 days, with the next phase of development commencing in the coming months.
The Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA), a Utah State government entity focused on economic development, has taken over the project. MIDA issued a statement acknowledging that with the project area "only just created yesterday," they would coordinate with the development team to define next steps, necessary studies, and the state regulatory process. MIDA also committed to community engagement through open houses and public meetings. The 40,000-acre project is expected to take years to complete.
