Kingsland, Georgia residents packed City Hall to voice strong opposition to planned data centers, citing concerns about potential harm to homes, the Navy base, local ecosystem, wildlife, and already depleted water and electricity resources. Despite their readiness to speak, two specific data center proposals were abruptly removed from the city commission's agenda by the applicant just minutes after the meeting began. News4JAX reporter Chris Will highlighted that while these immediate proposals were pulled, the community's fight is far from over. Residents expressed a unified "no" to data centers, emphasizing their determination to be heard on the issue. In March, the city council had adopted an ordinance establishing rules for data center development, including location, distance from residences, and restrictions on water and noise. However, the city is now considering suspending this newly adopted ordinance for 90 days. This proposed suspension would allow for additional legal review and public input, potentially leading to revisions of the rules. If enacted, this suspension would also halt any new data center applications in Kingsland. The city council is scheduled to vote on this potential suspension at its next official meeting on May 11th, with additional public input hearings anticipated in June.
