The St. Joseph County Drainage Board has postponed a decision regarding Amazon's request to dewater 35 million gallons of water daily at its construction site, marking the second time the request has been tabled. The board cited a need for more clarity on the proposal.
Amazon is seeking an extension to a previously approved permit to remove groundwater to install essential infrastructure, including water, sewer, and electric lines, on the southwest corner of its property. Representatives for Amazon stated that the 35-million-gallon request represents a maximum daily allowance, typically only used for a short period to initially draw down the water table, after which discharge is significantly lower.
However, local residents and farmers voiced strong opposition and concerns at Monday's meeting. Farmer Steve Matthys highlighted the enormity of the request, comparing it to the usage of an ethanol plant or Notre Dame Stadium, and raised fears about the long-term environmental impact. Other neighbors reported crop damage from previous dewatering activities without compensation, specifically mentioning issues with bean crops due to saturated soil conditions.
