Cass County Planning Commission approves moratorium on data center development
The Cass County Planning Commission approved an 18-month moratorium on data center development, driven by citizen concerns over a proposed Tenaska and Google project. Residents and State Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh voiced worries about funding, resource consumption, water access, utility bills, and environmental impacts related to such developments.
The Cass County Planning Commission recently approved an 18-month moratorium on data center development, following significant public concern. This decision comes after energy company Tenaska announced a proposed partnership with Google to construct a 2,000-acre natural gas power plant and data center on 1,354 acres in Cass County, south of Murray and Beaver Lake.
Residents, organized by groups like Cass County Data Center Watch, expressed worries about the project's funding, resource consumption, and potential impact on water access and utility bills for family farmers. Edison McDonald, a member of the group, emphasized the need for a quality process, more information, and thoughtful zoning to ensure community protection. State Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh also supported the moratorium, citing her recently passed state-level legislation that requires data center companies to negotiate community benefits and highlighting the critical need to understand environmental impacts, especially regarding water.
