Weld County Approves Global AI Data Center Near Windsor
Weld County commissioners unanimously approved a land-use permit for Global AI (Colorado), LLC to operate a data center in an existing industrial facility near Windsor, Colorado. Despite the approval, residents raised concerns during public meetings regarding water use, noise, electricity demand, and infrastructure impacts on the community. This decision marks the first data center considered under Weld County's new Use by Special Review process for data centers.
The Weld County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a land-use permit for Global AI (Colorado), LLC to establish a data center in an existing industrial facility near Windsor, Colorado. The vote on September 9 followed a 7-0 recommendation for approval by the Weld County Planning Commission on September 1. This project is the first data center reviewed under Weld County's new Use by Special Review process, designed to evaluate proposed facilities against specific land-use standards.
During public meetings, residents expressed concerns about the data center's potential impact on water use, noise levels, electricity demand, local infrastructure, and the surrounding community. Commissioner Coordinator Lynette Peppler addressed a primary concern, stating that the project would not convert agricultural land, instead utilizing an existing industrial site. Commissioner Chair Scott James highlighted the potential for economic activity, though acknowledged it would not match past employment levels at the site.
While the approval grants the land-use permit under specific conditions (USR26-0019), Global AI must still secure additional permits, including building, electrical, mechanical, fire, life-safety, utility, and environmental clearances. Any future expansions or significant changes will require further county review. Weld County regulations, including a 65 dB(C) noise limit and compliance with state water use rules, remain in effect for data centers.
