Aberdeen City Council Extends Data Center Permit Moratorium Through July 2027
The Aberdeen City Council adopted Resolution No. 26-10-01R extending the city’s moratorium on issuing local permits for data centers until July 1, 2027. The extension allows additional time to study permanent regulations addressing potential impacts on water, wastewater, electric infrastructure, emergency services, noise and land use.
The Aberdeen City Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 26-10-01R on Oct. 19, 2026, extending an existing moratorium on local data center permits within the city’s corporate limits through July 1, 2027. The measure passed after a public hearing and a 9-0 vote, with Mayor Travis Schaunaman signing the resolution and Jordan McQuillen serving as attesting finance officer.
The city said additional time is needed to complete its review of data center regulations, receive public input and consider permanent changes to its zoning rules. Officials cited concerns about water supply, wastewater capacity, electric infrastructure, emergency services, noise and compatibility with neighboring properties.
