Worcester County pauses data center permits during zoning review
Worcester County Commissioners in Maryland have enacted a temporary moratorium on new permits for data centers and cable landing stations. This pause, approved through Resolution No. 26-18, will last up to 12 months to allow county staff to draft comprehensive zoning regulations. All pending and future permit applications, as well as Board of Zoning Appeals proceedings for such facilities, are halted during this period.
Worcester County Commissioners in Maryland have approved a temporary moratorium on new permits for data centers and cable landing stations. The resolution, No. 26-18, was enacted on July 21 and will remain in effect for up to 12 months, or until rescinded by the commissioners.
Commissioner President Ted Elder stated the pause allows staff to "evaluate the impacts of data centers and cable landing stations and develop thoughtful regulations" rather than react to future proposals. During this period, county staff will draft comprehensive zoning regulations for the construction, location, and operation of these facilities.
The moratorium applies to all pending and future permit applications and also temporarily halts all Board of Zoning Appeals proceedings related to data centers and cable landing stations. Once the drafting process is complete, the proposed legislation will be presented for public consideration at a future County Commissioners meeting.
