South Bristol data center ban clears environmental review after residents voice support
South Bristol’s proposed zoning amendment banning data centers, AI computing facilities and related infrastructure has cleared environmental review. The town found the measure would have no significant adverse environmental impact, and Town Supervisor Lisa Moore expects the Town Board to adopt it before the end of the year.
South Bristol’s proposed prohibition on data centers and related infrastructure in Ontario County has cleared review under New York’s State Environmental Quality Review Act. The town issued a negative declaration, determining that the zoning amendment would not require a full environmental impact statement.
The proposed law would bar data centers, AI computing facilities, cryptocurrency mining operations and supporting systems such as backup generators, batteries, cooling and water equipment, substations and transformers. Residents broadly supported the measure during recent public meetings, while Town Supervisor Lisa Moore said adoption was expected before year-end.
The restriction is intended to protect South Bristol’s rural character, natural resources and portion of the Canandaigua Lake watershed, amid concerns about data centers’ electricity and water demands. It would be a permanent zoning-code prohibition rather than a temporary moratorium and would take effect after approval by the Town Board and filing with the state.
