Toms River moves to ban data centers; no one is looking to build one | Exclusive
The Toms River Township Council unanimously introduced an ordinance that would prohibit data centers, server farms and cryptocurrency mining facilities throughout the township. The proposed ban is scheduled for a second reading and public hearing on Dec. 9, although no data center application has been filed in Toms River.
The Toms River Township Council unanimously introduced an ordinance to amend township zoning regulations and prohibit data centers, server farms and cryptocurrency mining facilities in all areas of Toms River, including as conditional uses. Council President David Ciccozzi said the measure was initiated by the council majority, while Mayor Daniel Rodrick expressed support for the ban.
The proposal comes amid broader New Jersey opposition to data center development, driven by concerns about noise and heavy water and electricity consumption. A Stockton University poll found that 52% of surveyed New Jersey residents opposed additional data center development, compared with 29% who supported it. Toms River’s ordinance is scheduled for a second reading and public hearing on Dec. 9, and no facility application has been submitted to the township.
