Could a massive data center be coming to San Diego?
Manchester Financial Group is considering a 400-megawatt data center at the U.S. Navy’s 70-acre site in San Diego’s Midway District, which could become California’s largest. Mayor Todd Gloria and other city leaders oppose the proposal, citing potential impacts on electricity costs and calling for local restrictions and federal intervention.
Manchester Financial Group is considering developing a 400-megawatt data center at a 70-acre federally owned U.S. Navy site in San Diego’s Midway District, near Interstate 5. The property currently houses the Navy’s cybersecurity operations, and the proposed facility could be the largest data center in California.
Councilman Sean Elo-Rivera and Mayor Todd Gloria are raising concerns that the project could increase electricity costs for San Diego ratepayers. San Diego Gas & Electric says new state laws are intended to protect customers from those costs, while city leaders are pushing for local restrictions and federal intervention to prevent or limit the development.
