The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has granted a final air quality permit to Amazon Data Services, Inc., clearing the path for the installation of 99 emergency backup generators at its data center campus in Frederick, Maryland. The facility is located at 3250 Digital Drive.
This approval comes after extensive technical reviews and a period of significant public debate concerning the potential environmental impact of the diesel-fired generators. Environment Secretary Serena McIlwain stated that MDE addressed residents' concerns and is confident the permit protects air quality and public health. The permit includes specific restrictions on how the machinery can be operated.
To ensure compliance, MDE plans to conduct unannounced inspections and regularly review the facility’s operational logs. Amazon is also mandated to submit annual reports on its emissions. Additionally, Amazon must secure a separate oil permit and demonstrate a robust spill prevention plan before storing diesel fuel for the generators.
The approval signifies a major step forward for the data center project despite the prior public objections.
