Lansing officials will hold a Nov. 17 public meeting on a proposed zoning change that would prohibit data centers and cryptocurrency mining facilities as permitted land uses in the town. The proposal cites concerns about energy and water consumption, environmental impacts, noise, lighting and quality of life.

The Town of Lansing will take public comment Nov. 17 on a proposed zoning resolution that would add definitions for data centers, cryptocurrency mining facilities and related activities while excluding them from the town’s schedule of permitted uses. Such facilities could still potentially proceed through exceptions including a use variance, a lawful preexisting use or a newly created zoning district.

The proposal would narrow the definition of "general processing" so it applies to tangible materials rather than digital data handled by servers and other information technology equipment. The resolution cites concerns about energy and water use, water and air quality, noise, lighting and effects on residents, as well as uncertainty surrounding New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive order on data center development. The special Lansing Town Board meeting will be held at Lansing Middle School and made available through YouTube.
