Harrodsburg City Commission Questioned On I-T Zoning Vote
The Harrodsburg City Commission is facing questions about its 4-1 vote approving an Industrial Technology zoning ordinance that could allow a single hyperscale data center. Members of We Are Mercer, a local opposition group, also questioned why a previously discussed moratorium was never presented and why the commission acted before an updated comprehensive plan was completed.
The Harrodsburg City Commission discussed questions surrounding its Oct. 13 approval of an Industrial Technology zoning ordinance. Drafted by the Harrodsburg-Mercer County Joint Planning and Zoning Commission, the ordinance would create a zone permitting construction of one hyperscale data center in Mercer County.
Roger Johnson, a city commission candidate, asked commissioners to explain their 4-1 vote and why they proceeded despite the Mercer County Fiscal Court’s rejection of the zoning. Representatives of We Are Mercer, which opposes large-scale data center development, attended the meeting. Questions also focused on a proposed moratorium discussed in August that was never formally presented and on whether the commission should have waited for an updated comprehensive plan.
