Demonstrators gather at State Capitol against AI data centers

Advocacy groups from across Missouri convened at the state Capitol in Jefferson City on Wednesday, staging a demonstration against the rapid development of AI data centers. Organizers called for a statewide moratorium on new data center projects until comprehensive regulations are implemented to address public health, environmental impacts, utility burdens, and ensure greater transparency and democratic input in the approval process.
Residents from various parts of the state shared their concerns. John Burns of Auxvasse expressed a lack of public desire for the data centers, while Bob Ridgley noted a facility currently under construction within a mile of his home. Nancy Watson of Franklin County highlighted a recent decision by three county commissioners who approved a hyperscale data center next to her property and another nearby, despite community opposition.
The group presented a platform demanding no new data centers until adequate protections are in place. Gabe Cotton of Festus emphasized the need for a state moratorium to protect Missouri towns and ensure residents have a genuine voice in the process.
Following the indoor demonstration, the group marched outside the Capitol. During this march, a 31-year-old man from Kansas City was arrested by Jefferson City Police for being in the road without proper permits after repeated warnings to disperse.
